Future FUHSD By-Trustee Area Map Is Very Unfavorable to MVHS

Map 5 (revised)

What happened on the FUHSD board meeting on April 24, 2024?

At the 4/24 FUHSD school district by-trustee district map meeting, the school committee finally voted to proceed with Map 5.

Only two out of the five school committee members, Rod Sinks and Jeff Moe from Monta Vista, voted for Map 6.

Unfortunately, Map 5 is the worst map of all for Monta Vista:

  • Compared to the Monta Vista High School Attendance Map, the district where Monta Vista is located has lost the part between De Anza/Stelling (Lincoln, Garden Gate Elementary School), the Saratoga area located west of De Anza, and part of the Monta Vista traditional area adjacent to Saratoga. At the same time, part of Homestead High School north of I-280 was added. This greatly dilutes Monta Vista in its area, refer to attached map below.
  • What is even more unfavorable is that in the next two years (2024-2026), Monta Vista will not have any FUHSD board member from this region. Since the term of the current two Monta Vista School board members (Rod & Jeff) will end in 2024, Map 5 does not provide the electoral rights that Monta Vista seeks in 2024. Current School board member Rosa Kim from Homestead will represent the Monta Vista district (and part of the Homestead district).
  • Before the 4/24 meeting, Monta Vista residents had a meeting with Rosa Kim, and we clearly stated and emphasized that Monta Vista residents were strongly opposed to Map 5. However, Rosa Kim ignored the voices of Monta Vista residents and voted Map 5 in the board meeting. In fact, residents of the Homestead area also expressed their demands to Rosa Kim that they did not want to be mixed with the Monta Vista campus and strongly opposed Figure 5. But Rosa Kim still supports the Map 5 which was advocated by Lynbrook and Cupertino High School, to broadly mix the Monta Vista and Homestead campuses.

What it means for us:

  • In Map 5, Monta Vista won’t be up for re-election until 2026. This results in Monta Vista’s future situation in the school district being very unfavorable, especially when it faces the risk of school closure. Please be aware of the risk of school closures in the future! North Sunnyvale has been working hard to re-open Sunnyvale High School. FUHSD can only maintain 5 high schools, if one high school is reopened, another must be closed, and the most likely closing high school will be in the south.
  • Additionly, the school district’s daily operations in recent years have also been very unfriendly to Monta Vista. In the past 10 years, the funds Monta Vista has received for campus construction are significantly lower than other high schools in the district (Monta Vista’s fund is about 100 million, and the average of other high schools is about 150 million). You can intuitively feel that the buildings of other high schools are obviously better than those of Monta Vista. Without Monta Vista’s own representative, the future school funds will continue to be unfavorable.

What can we do:

  • We are residents of the MV school district and volunteers who care about the community. Putting this information together is hoping to allow more residents to quickly understand what is currently happening and its potential impacts!
  • We don’t want to wait until school closure is actually put on the board agenda before everyone starts taking action, then it will be too late. Refer to the district’s recent process for closing Regnart Elementary School.

4/24 Board Approved Trustee Area Map 5 (Blue thick line is current school attendance boundary)
